Video: Professor Mary Nolan

April 3, 2023

In case you weren’t able to attend, we had a great turnout for this timely event. Professor Nolan’s talk on Book Bans, Educational Gag Orders and Censorship outlines the dimensions of the current culture wars taking place around K-12 institutions, colleges and universities, and libraries. It examines the targets of educational gag orders, which include the concepts and books used to teach history and social studies, race and racism, and issues of gender and sexuality. It examines as well struggles around control of school boards and the autonomy and job security of teachers. It asks why the culture wars around education have become so intense in the last few years and gives an overview of both groups trying to limit what is taught and read and those who oppose such initiatives.
